What is an AFB Smear test? An AFB (Acid-Fast Bacilli) Smear is a laboratory test used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) and other infections caused by mycobacteria. During this test, a sample of sputum, urine, or other bodily fluid is collected and treated with a special stain that binds to the unique cell wall of mycobacteria, allowing them to be seen under a microscope. The test is commonly used to quickly identify TB in patients who show symptoms such as coughing, weight loss, and fever.
