What is an Alanine Amino Transferase (ALT/SGPT) test? The Alanine Transaminase (ALT) test, also known as serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), measures ALT levels in the blood and is normally found inside liver cells. However, when the liver is damaged and inflamed, the ALT enzyme is released into the bloodstream. This process helps in the early detection of any damage to the liver.
